AFL club NEAFL lists announced

AFL club NEAFL lists have been announced today with academy players dominating selections for the 2020 season.

As per new NEAFL list rules confirmed in November, AFL clubs are permitted to list up to seven players, including up to two mature-age players.

At this stage, Brisbane, Sydney, Gold Coast and the GIANTS have opted to select academy players only.

The AFL club NEAFL lists are brimming with young talent, including 2019 Allies squad members Jackson Barling, Nick Brewer, Sam Gaden, Max Geddes and Sam Thorne (Sydney), Matt McGrory (GIANTS), Josh Gore (Gold Coast), and Bruce Reville and Kobe Tozer (Brisbane).

Of the 22 players selected, 20 have NEAFL experience with GIANTS pair Harry Grant and Lachie Squire earning Rising Star nominations last season as part of a club record four nominees in 2019.

Aspley junior Tozer will be one to watch in 2020 after an injury-riddled 2019 campaign. Yet to make his NEAFL debut, Tozer is a highly talented prospect who is set to make an impact this year as a key forward.

Northern Territory’s Brandon Rusca, who played 10 NEAFL games with NT Thunder last year, has been selected by Gold Coast through the club’s new academy zone.

This group of academy players are hoping to follow in the footsteps of Brisbane draftee Keidean Coleman, who was a member of the Lions’ NEAFL list last year prior to being selected in the NAB AFL National Draft.

Other notable graduates of the Under-19 Academy Squads (now known as NEAFL lists) since being introduced in 2018 include former Sydney rookie James Brown and current Swans listed player Sam Wicks.

All clubs are permitted to make a limited number of changes to their NEAFL lists prior to the national player transfer deadline on June 30.

The NEAFL list lodgement deadline for remaining clubs is on Monday, March 16.
