MATCH PREVIEW: Sydney v Sydney Uni

NEAFL ROUND 6

Saturday, May 11, 2019
Sydney Swans (3rd) v Sydney University (4th)
Henson Park, 11.30am

SUMMARY

The NEAFL Round 6 will kick off with the Sydney Swans against Sydney University at Henson Park on Saturday morning from 11.30am.

The Sydney Swans will be eager to bounce back from their first loss against the Brisbane Lions last week, against a side they have a healthy record against.

But the thirst for redemption doesn’t stop there, with Sydney University heading into the game after two successive losses to the Canberra Demons and Southport Sharks.

There’s no doubt that both teams have a fire in their bellies, making for an exciting watch for spectators this week.

TALKING POINTS

1. The Sydney Swans started their 2019 NEAFL season campaign without a hitch, at least until their loss last week against ladder leaders, the Brisbane Lions. There is no doubt that the youthful Swans are a promising side, but how will they bounce back after their first loss?

2. If Sydney University want the win against the Sydney Swans, starting well will be important – that ability to set the tempo for the win has proved to be a determining factor when the Students play. Starting well lead to both of the Students’ wins this season as they were 21 points ahead of the Aspley Hornets at quarter time and 39 points ahead of NT Thunder at quarter time.

3. The loss of defender Colin O’Riordan is a big one for Sydney, after he was duly rewarded with an AFL recall following an outstanding start to the season. O’Riordan was outstanding against the Brisbane Lions, finishing with 41 disposals at an elite 80% efficiency rate, eight marks and 10 rebound 50s for a total of 183 Champion Data ranking points. On the plus side, gun Geelong recruit Daniel Menzel comes in for his first match in Swans colours.

ROOKIE WATCH

This week will be the first chance for Sydney University’s young brigade to test themselves against AFL opposition. Rising Star nominee Bailey Stewart in particular will play a big role in the midfield. Averaging 24 disposals (50% contested), four clearances and six tackles so far, this weekend will be a big opportunity for Stewart to impress AFL recruiters.

STATS THAT MATTER

One of the Students’ strengths so far this season is setting up scoring opportunities from defence. They lead the competition for score launches originating from the defensive 50, kicking 91 points in total in their first four matches.

PREDICTION

Sydney Swans by 15 points.
