Gold Coast keeps finals hopes alive with big win over depleted GIANTS

The Gold Coast SUNS have kept their finals hopes alive with a big 85-point victory over the GIANTS at Metricon Stadium on Sunday

The heavily depleted GIANTS were only able to field seven listed players in the match with injuries running havoc in the 20.8 (128) to 6.7 (43) defeat.

The SUNS took full advantage of the GIANTS woes with an eight-goal-to-one first quarter setting the tempo for the match. Connor Nutting was red hot in the first half kicking four goals for the home side.

The visitors did well to stem the flow in the middle quarters, but the floodgates opened up against in the last when Gold Coast kicked six goals to one.

Jordan Murdoch led the SUNS with 26 disposals and a goal with the returning Jack Bowes also finding 25 disposals.

The SUNS returned to form in style after kicking just two goals last weekend, scoring over 120 points for just the second time this season.

For the GIANTS, Nick Shipley was elite, gathering 36 disposals to go with 12 marks. Kieren Briggs was impressive as well in the ruck again this week with 27 hit outs and 16 disposals.

The GIANTS missed out on an opportunity to capitalise on Aspley’s loss yesterday and move inside the top four and within striking distance of Sydney in third. The SUNS, meanwhile, are just two points outside the top six.

Looking towards next week, as the finals race heats up, the SUNS have a bye while the GIANTS will take on the Swans at GIANTS Stadium as part of an AFL-NEAFL double-header.
